Tickets, Convictions and Traffic School: What to List on a Quote
The violations question looks simple and causes more re-rated quotes than almost any other. The usual reason is not dishonesty. It is that people are unsure what counts, which date to use, and what to do with a ticket that has not been decided yet. Here is the order to work through it.
- Each citation: the date, the location and what it was for
- How each one ended: paid, contested, traffic school, or still open
- Court case numbers for anything pending
- Any license suspension, with dates
- Your own DMV driver record printout, if you have ordered one
Step 1: sort what counts from what does not
| Item | List it? |
|---|---|
| Moving-violation conviction: speeding, red light, unsafe lane change, phone use | Yes |
| Ticket dismissed after traffic school | Yes, if the form asks about traffic school or all citations |
| DUI conviction | Yes. It stays on the DMV record for ten years. |
| License suspension or revocation | Yes |
| Parking ticket | No. It is not a driving conviction. |
| Ticket still pending in court | Mention it as pending |
Traffic school deserves a note. California's Good Driver rules allow no more than one qualifying traffic-school dismissal in the previous three years (Insurance Code 1861.025), which tells you the dismissals are tracked rather than invisible. Say so if the form asks.
Step 2: use the violation date
The DMV measures reporting periods from the violation date, the day the ticket was written. Most convictions are reported for three years from that date, most two-point violations for ten, and DUI convictions for ten. When the form asks "in the last three years", count back from today using the violation date, not the day you paid the fine.
Step 3: handle a pending ticket honestly
A ticket is not a conviction until the court rules; the DMV's own glossary defines the conviction date as the date the court gave its ruling. You can answer the conviction question accurately while it is pending, but tell the agent it exists. Some companies wait for the outcome before re-rating, often at renewal, and that varies by insurance company. A quote that knows about the ticket will not surprise you later.
Step 4: cover every household driver
The question usually applies to everyone listed. A spouse's speeding ticket or a teenager's red-light conviction belongs on the form as much as yours does, and it will appear when the company checks each driver's record.
Step 5: know what the answer feeds
Your driving safety record is the first of the three factors every California insurer must weigh (Insurance Code 1861.02). It also decides Good Driver status: no more than one violation point in three years, among other criteria, and a Good Driver Discount policy must be priced at least 20 percent below what you would otherwise pay. One honest ticket rarely ends that; a hidden one creates a second problem, because misrepresenting your safety record is a ground for cancellation (Insurance Code 661).
If your record shows something that is not yours
Order your own record from the DMV. If an entry is wrong, the DMV accepts a Report of Incorrect Record (form DL 207, or DL 207A for a collision), or an abstract or letter from the court. Fix it before you quote rather than arguing it with each insurer.
With your list ready, request your quote through our quote form and note anything pending in the message box.

Do I list a ticket I took to traffic school?
If the form asks about traffic school or all citations, yes. California's Good Driver rules count qualifying traffic-school dismissals, allowing no more than one in three years.
How far back do I need to go?
Use the window printed on the form. For reference, the DMV reports most convictions for three years from the violation date and most two-point violations and DUI convictions for ten.
Will one ticket cost me the Good Driver Discount?
Not necessarily. The criteria allow no more than one violation point in the previous three years, alongside the other conditions, so a single one-point ticket may leave you qualified.
What if the DMV record shows a ticket that is not mine?
Ask the DMV to correct it with a Report of Incorrect Record (DL 207) or with paperwork from the court. Do that before quoting, so every company sees the corrected record.
